Are you a new photographer?

Updated: Jul 2, 2020

Welcome to the community!

Welcome to my first ever blog post. I am not a writer in any sense of the word, this is just an opportunity for us to get to know each other better and possibly learn a bit from each other.

So, you want to become a photographer. Its not as easy as picking up a fancy camera and snapping a photo, but it doesn't have to be complicated either.

The one thing that I first recommend doing is learning everything you can about the camera that you have. I learned very early on that you don't need some crazy expensive camera to take nice images, but you do need to know how your camera works. Even if you are just using your smart phone.

Once you have learned everything you could possibly need to know about your camera and how it works I recommend learning how to shoot your camera in the different settings. Some examples of different settings include portrait, sport, manual and more depending on the camera you are using. I find that the setting I lean towards using the most is manual as it gives me the freedom to adjust the aperture and shutter speed to get my photos to look exactly how I want.

The next thing I recommend is to lose yourself in the crazy amount of FREE knowledge that is available online and on YouTube! If this isn't enough for your knowledge hungry sole look around at the photographers in your are and join the community. the majority of us are willing to answer any questions that you may have. be prepared though to find some who don't even acknowledge your existence. These are the photographers that are under the impression that you are either a) trying to steal their photography style, or b) only view you as another form of competition.

When you first start out with photography, try as many different styles as you can. There is a photography genre for everything! Sports, Boudoir, Fashion, and Food just to name a few! A lot of people say to pick one or two and specialize in those genres. I say, don't limit yourself in the beginning. There is so much to learn. It doesn't matter if this is your first day or your 100th, there is always something new to learn and I believe we should share our knowledge with the world.

The next thing that I recommend you research is editing software. of course you always have the option of paying someone who is willing to edit your photos for you, but at the end of the day the finished product will be more your style if you do all the work. When I first started out, I was just a hobby photographer and never really saw the benefit of paying for software. Everything that I needed I was able to do on free photo editor websites online. Once I turned my hobby into a business I decided to go with adobe. I use Photoshop and Light room as well as Light room classic. The adobe product line allowed me to expand my style and edit the photos to match my vision. Please do your research and find what editing software fits your needs.

I hoped that this post made it a little less scary to jump into the photography world. Please know that I am always willing to share my knowledge and help out anyone any way that I can. Thank you for taking the time to read my first blog post!
